House investigation committee entitled to former president’s records.
The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a request by former President Donald Trump to use executive privilege to block a committee of the House of Representatives investigating the January 6 incident at the Capitol from access to the president’s White House records. By this ruling, a “trove” of documents will be made available to congressional investigators. Those documents include speech drafts, call and visitor logs, handwritten notes, and other files previously kept by senior aides of the former president, like his chief of staff, top advisers, press secretary, and White House counsel.
The only member of the high court who signaled he would have granted the request for emergency relief was Justice Clarence Thomas.
The ruling is seen by some as potentially the most significant yet for the January 6 select committee.
The committee’s chairman, Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, and vice chair, Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, jointly stated, “The Supreme Court’s action tonight is a victory for the rule of law and American democracy. The Select Committee has already begun to receive records that the former President had hoped to keep hidden and we look forward to additional productions regarding this important information.”
